February 25, 2011

Dear Friends,

This week the House of Representatives began working hard in committees hearing testimony on the first round of referred bills. Meanwhile, on the heels of the release of the 2010 Census Data, the House Redistricting Committee scheduled its first set of hearings to discuss the redrawing of district lines for the State Board of Education, the Texas House, and Congressional seats.

On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to cast my first vote in the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, and participated in my first Energy Resources hearing on Wednesday. The Energy Resources hearing was joint with the Environmental Regulation Committee. Each of these committees works closely with one another to create responsible energy policy with respect to the environment.

As always, I continue to support legislation that will promote fiscal austerity and conservative values. For example, I have lent my support to the following bills:

  • HB 85: Prevents the state or any governmental entity from using tax dollars to fund abortions.
  • HB 926: Allows the Department of Public Safety to report unusually high numbers of licenses issued at a single address to the Secretary of State, as this can lead to voter fraud.
  • HCR 66: Calls on Congress to eliminate regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency which stunt the growth of manufacturing in Texas.

Over the course of the week, I visited with the Presidents of UT Dallas and Richland College regarding higher education funding, and with constituents representing the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas about their legislative priorities.

My staff and I also heard from numerous physicians and dentists in the district about their concerns. Finally, I was thrilled to have representatives from Brinker International in Austin this week to celebrate Texas Restaurant Association Day at the Capitol, and was honored to recognize them with an official resolution on the House floor. As always, I appreciate your continued input and encourage you to stop by my office when you are in Austin. I’m honored to be your voice in Austin.

Sincerely,
Stefani Carter
