Carter Votest to Approve Sonogram Legislation

March 10, 2011

(AUSTIN, TX) – Representative Stefani Carter (Dallas-R) voted to approve legislation requiring that women considering an abortion undergo a sonogram. As approved by the Texas House of Representatives, House Bill 15 would ensure that any woman considering an abortion receive live, real-time pictures and heartbeats of her unborn child.

“This bill is a necessity for women considering abortion,” said Carter. “Not only will it help them to make a more medically informed decision, it will also help them to understand of the gravity of their choice.”

Under House Bill 15, women thinking about undergoing an abortion would have a sonogram 72 to 24 hours before the procedure. The physician or sonographer performing the procedure must provide the woman with a simple, easy-to-understand explanation of the sonogram’s images. The bill exempts women having a medical emergency.

Representative Carter is a coauthor of House Bill 15 which is currently awaiting referral to a committee in the Senate.
