Carter Named 32nd Most Conservative Member of Texas House

July 14, 2011

(AUSTIN, TX) – Representative Stefani Carter (R-Dallas) was named the thirty-second most conservative member of the Texas House of Representatives according to a recent study at Rice University.

On a scale of 1 to 149, with 1 being the most liberal and 149 being the most conservative, Rep. Carter was ranked 118 in the House. There are 150 members of Texas House of which 101 are Republicans. The ranking is based on just under 1,000 divisive roll call votes held during the combined 82nd regular and first special legislative sessions.

“When I was elected, I made a promise to represent strong, conservative values,” said Carter. “I am pleased that my voting record reflects my commitment to this promise.”

Carter is in good company regarding her ranking. She joins many senior members with strong conservative records such as former Speaker Tom Craddick (R-Midland), Rep. Wayne Christian (R-Nacogdoches), Rep. Phil King (R-Weatherford), and Rep. Linda Harper-Brown (R-Irving). Fellow conservative freshmen Rep. Van Taylor (R-Plano) and Rep. David Simpson (R-Longview) also achieved a ranking comparable to Carter’s.

The study was conducted by Mark P. Jones, who is a fellow at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. The Baker Institute is one of the leading nonpartisan public policy think tanks in the country. It ranks 27th among U.S. think tanks and 16th among university-affiliated think tanks worldwide. The goal of the institute is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in public policy.

Stefani Carter is serving her first term representing House District 102, which includes parts of Dallas, Richardson, and Garland. She is a native of the Dallas area and a former prosecutor.
